Learn mindfulness to help manage stress and increase your effectiveness in ethical practices in law. Arguably, we need some stress in order to motivate. However, stress also can shut down our nervous system such that we are not accessing our best qualities or highest cognitive functioning in order to problem solve and work effectively.

This course will teach participants:

  1. how to connect with a calm mind and body in stressful circumstances;
  2. how to access all of our deepest values when addressing ethical practice in law;
  3. how to bring our best qualities when ethics situations arise.

General Course Description:

The Professional Code of Conduct within the legal profession identifies clear guidelines for lawyer to lawyer conduct and lawyer to client conduct. However, there exists a broad range of personal and professional values that underpin this code that require closer examination. There are many other aspects of legal practice that may present dilemmas concerning the application of explicit and implicit values and motivations in the legal profession.

This course will help lawyers  experientially integrate the Rules of Professional Conduct relating to:

  • Integrity
  • Honesty
  • Candour
  • Loyalty
  • Relationships with Clients and Colleagues including opposing Counsel

In this course, participants will learn mindfulness tools for self-reflection that will assist the participants to develop a baseline of integrity and to help maintain their composure while advocating vigorously in the stress and pressure of day to day practice.  These mindful experiential practices will be explored through foundational ethical teachings which form the basis of all Professional Codes of Conduct and personal relationships. Participants will be introduced to the 16 Guidelines (16guidelines.org).
